This April, three dozen humanists paired up like Mormon missionaries and rang doorbells in Cambridge, Massachusetts--but not to spread a message of faith. Instead, they gave away free energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs to residents who surrendered their old-fashioned incandescent bulbs in exchange. Coming at the conclusion of the American Humanist Association's 2011 conference, this community service project collected a couple hundred energy-hogging bulbs for reuse in children's crafts projects.
